Last week was Book Week, the annual event promoted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia that is beloved of schools and feared by busy parents. Around the country, kids dressed up as their favourite literary characters and paraded happily. At Maldon Primary School, the book parade took place on Friday 23 August and the effort contributed by parents and kids was evident in the colourful variety of genres and costume styles. There were lots of fairies, butterflies, dinosaurs and witches; all classic storybook characters. Children dressed as characters from favourite or famous novels while the titles of others were trickier to identify; the book featuring the Minions, for example. Observers noticed Snowy and Captain Haddock (but no Tintin), Harry Potter, Matilda, Dorothy and look, there’s Wally!
