This amazing photo was taken by Marie Bell in Edwards Street looking towards Mt Tarrengower on Sunday morning, 15 November, about 8am.
“I believe they are mammatus clouds that have become stretched by nearby high winds, but I’m not really a meteorologist!” Marie said.
Indeed they do appear to be mammatus clouds.
According to earthsky.org, which features very similar clouds on its website, mammatus clouds are pouch-like protrusions hanging from the undersides of clouds, usually thunderstorm anvil clouds but other types of clouds as well.
Composed primarily of ice, these cloud pouches can extend hundreds of miles in any direction, remaining visible in the sky for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes at a time.
